Walking into the Santa Monica College campus, I passed a group of students and made my way into the downstairs of the first building on my right side. I’ve been there before. I pushed the buttons on the intercom located outside the locked door. A camera pointed to my face. Usually someone answers the phone and I then re-enact a scene from one of my favorite movies, “Jackie Brown”, I say when talking back to the person on the other side of the phone handle. But this time no one answered. A custodian finally allowed me into the radio station. She asked me if I was there to see Garth and if he knew that I was coming. I said, “yes”.
Garth Trinidad is one of the greatest musical visionaries of all times, and DJ of KCRW. His show happens at primetime every weekday from 8-10. By watching him and listening to him I’ve learned how to speak professionally in rhythm. I love visiting him at the station I get to discover new artists, and I get to catch up with my old friend all at once. This time I came in to translate lyrics into Portuguese, because Garth is releasing his album in Brazil and he wants to re-do the vocal parts in my Portuguese. I have to say for a speaking my native language for the first time that Garth had the accent down and I’m looking forward to hear the finished song, because the English version is dope!
