New School/Old School: Athletics

Old School: Althea Gibson went above and beyond as a tennis player, winning Wimbledon in 1957 and not just one but FIVE grand slams. She was the world’s number-one ranked female tennis player from 1957 to 1958 and even went on to play golf, becoming the first African American woman to play. She’s been inducted into the prestigious Tennis Hall of Fame, and will be remembered for her incredible dedication and skill, and for breaking color barriers in Tennis.

New School: Gabby Douglas is the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics! Her and her team of five amazing gymnasts, nicked the “Fierce Five,” took home the gold for America in the Summer 2012 olympics. She’s been known for her passion and for her outspokenness on behalf of her teammates, and has her pictures on the Wheaties box to show for it!
