Sometimes people tell me they wish they could do what I did — start my own clothing line. But it takes more than creativity and inspiration — you have to always find new ground, or you don’t stay relevant as an artist. By new ground, I mean different ways to express an idea or shape or emotion through the fabric and design of the dress I’m making. Just as I grow and transform and expand as a person, I must as an artist, too. Otherwise the work flatlines. If you are an artist, thirst for new ground. Ask yourself: How can I see my project in a new way and make it more beautiful? Then investigate, and try to execute your vision. It’s okay to be scared of new ground, and it’s okay to fail, too. New ground will keep your work thriving. And you, as the artist, happy.
