There’s a student named Wallflower at Beachwood Charter, and I chaperoned her birthday party in her mother’s garden. In this garden all the leaves and stems and flowers and webs made patterns in the dappled summer early evening light- patterns against each other that were so beautiful it was hard to concentrate on the girls. I got many dress designs ideas from these textures- even the shadows of the plants playing off the stucco walls- like light and shadow chandeliers. Later we lit candles for Wallflower’s cake, and the flames and dappled light made flames in my heart- blue flames- until the light faded to purpe and we all went home in the summer desert chill.
