It is true that when I write I really do need silence. This can happen in a noisy place, but usually it’s in the canyon near my house. But it’s a silence of the heart I mean. Like empty and spacious and dark. Right now it is very quiet in my room and the window is open and there is a cool, summer-lit breeze and I hear blowing branches and sunset birds and some coyotes and traffic far away but then just nothing but the song I’m writing. The words and the changes. Even when I listen to loud music I can still hear the silence in it. This is writing a song.
